State police offer reward in Shelby murder

Kentucky State Police are offering a reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the person responsible for the murder of a Shelby County man.

James Carl Duckett, 43, was found dead in his home on Nov. 10. State police have not said publicly how he died. A pickup taken from Duckett’s driveway was recovered hours later.

Police hope somebody saw someone driving the 2004 Dodge Ram pickup or recalls seeing Duckett with someone else in the days or hours before he was found dead, Trooper Ron Turley said.

The amount and source of the reward are being withheld, Turley said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Mitch Harris, (502) 227-2221.

Man indicted in slayings of 3 children in western Ky.

The Associated Press

A western Kentucky man was indicted Wednesday in the slayings of three children and a violent sexual assault on their mother - a case the prosecutor described as “horrific.”

The Trigg County grand jury indicted Kevin W. Dunlap on three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder for the attack on the childrens’ mother, said Commonwealth’s Attorney G.L. Ovey.

Dunlap, of Hopkinsville, was also indicted on four counts of kidnapping, first-degree rape, burglary and evidence tampering.

State police said the woman was raped by an assailant who stabbed her three children - a 17- and 14-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy - at their home in the Roaring Spring community near the Fort Campbell Army post in southern Kentucky.

“There are aggravating circumstances many times over in this case,” Ovey said Wednesday after the indictments were returned. Ovey said he has not worked a case “any more horrific than this one.”

Dunlap’s attorney, James Gibson, did not return a call Wednesday seeking comment.

Ovey said Dunlap will be arraigned on the indictments likely next month. Dunlap, 36, remains in the Christian County Jail.

A state police detective testified at a hearing last month that the mother was approached by a man carrying a black handgun while she was doing yard work at her home.

The Associated Press has previously identified the mother, but is no longer naming her because authorities now say she was sexually assaulted. The AP generally does not identify victims of sexual assault.

State police Detective Jerry Jones said the mother was raped before her three children came home. The children were bound with white zip ties and gagged. Jones said they all had stab and slash wounds, and the home was set on fire.

Police are investigating a murder and robbery in Shelby County.

Jim Duckett Jr., 43, was found dead late Monday morning at his residence at 5300 Rockbridge Road, according to a Kentucky State Police press release.

The cause of death was not disclosed by authorities who chose to withhold that piece of information, Trooper Ron Turley said.

Duckett’s newly purchased 2004 Dodge Ram pickup was missing from the driveway and state police are looking for it or anyone who might have seen it. It is possible the truck is connected to the murder, but it is impossible to know for sure until it is recovered, Trooper Ron Turley said.

The truck is a 2004 four-door Dodge Ram, gray with temporary tag number 5311587. The truck has chrome wheels, chrome grill and chrome above the wheel wells.

Anyone with information should contact state police at (502) 227-2221 and ask for Det. Mitch Harris or call local police.

Son sentenced to life for murdering his parents

By Shawntaye Hopkins

WILLIAMSTOWN — A Grant County man who pleaded guilty last month to murdering his parents was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 20 years.

Russell Bramlage

Russell Bramlage

Russell G. Bramlage, 23, was indicted in April on several charges, including two counts of murder in the deaths of Terry and Lynda Bramlage, both 53. Police found their bodies in the basement of their home in Williamstown on Nov. 13. Both had been shot twice with a shotgun.

On Wednesday, Circuit Judge Stephen L. Bates accepted the prosecutions recommendation that Bramlage serve a life sentence for each murder count, 20 years for first-degree robbery charge and five years each on charges of tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a forged instrument.

During sentencing Wednesday, Bramlage said he wanted to speak, but he did not want to discuss what was on his mind in open court.

“The people that need to hear it, they will hear it,” Bramlage said.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Crawford said he didn’t know what Bramlage planned to say, but he had hoped that Bramlage would apologize to the family.

“This family will go through years of trying to get over this,” Crawford said.

Defense attorneys were not immediately available to comment.

Bill Schild, Lynda Bramlage’s brother, said he was satisfied with the sentence and that the family was looking forward to moving on with their lives. Schild said he was headed to Keeneland after court with his family.

“It is what it is,” he said. “We’re glad that this part of it’s over.”

Witness accounts assailed in truck-wash slaying

By Brandon Ortiz
bortiz@herald-leader.com

A defense attorney made an impassioned plea Monday morning on behalf of a Lexington man on trial in the 2003 slaying of a truck driver, accusing a cohort of violent felons of conspiring to pin the blame on his client.

Defense attorney Scott Drabenstadt noted the inconsistencies of prosecution witnesses who accused Marc Buchanan of robbing and killing Carl Gene McClung, a West Virginian, at the Scrub-a-Truck wash on Nandino Boulevard in August 2003. Each witness had pending charges and prior records.

And the details of the witnesses’ stories varied, from minor details like the car driven to the crime scene to glaring inconsistencies like the race of the victim and one of the perpetrators, Drabenstadt said.

“Every one of them is a violent felon. They came in here and they lied,” Drabenstadt told jurors in his closing argument in Fayette Circuit Court. “And they have stolen, temporarily, his freedom. Temporarily — because this jury is not going to let it happen. This jury is not going to stand for this.”

Court recessed shortly before noon for a lunch break. Prosecutors will present their closing argument in the afternoon.

Kentucky inmate charged with 1997 Lexington murder

shopkins@herald-leader.com

A man serving time in the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Eddyville has been indicted on murder, rape, assault and other charges stemming from events that occurred when he was a juvenile.

Two years ago, Lexington police used DNA evidence to link Aarion Lamon Johnson, now 28, to death of Susanne Stoffels, who was found on her home on Ross Street in 1997.

He was also charged with abusing her corpse. He admitted to the killing Stoffels in June 2006 while in the penitentiary, court records say. He also admitted to abusing her corpse.

Johnson was also charged with assaulting and sodomizing another woman in May 1996, and raping a third woman in June 1996.

He was serving a 70-year sentence in the state penitentiary for previous burglary and sexual offenses when the arrest warrant for those charges was issued two years ago.

On Wednesday, a Fayette County grand jury indicted Johnson on those charges as well as four counts of first-degree burglary related to the incidents in the late-90s.

Johnson is expected to appear in court at 1 p.m. Sept. 26.
