A southern Kentucky man has been indicted on an incest charge for allegedly fathering a child with his daughter nearly two decades ago.
Pulaski County Sheriff’s detective Brett Whitaker told the Commonwealth Journal the case against the now 78-year-old man started in 2005 when officials investigated a neglect complaint about the child, who was born in 1991.
Whitaker said DNA confirmed the man was the child’s father and grandfather.
The Associated Press doesn’t name alleged victims of sex crimes and isn’t naming the man in this case to protect the daughter’s identity.
Whitaker told the Somerset newspaper the man admitted a sexual relationship from the time the daughter was 13 until she was in her 30s. The man was not immediately arrested as authorities sought him following the indictment last week. Whitaker said the woman is now in her 40s.

A Lexington man told police he shot an intruder, who later died, after the man entered his apartment near Shillito Park Wednesday night and tried to rob him, Lexington police said.
About 10:45 p.m., police found the resident suffering from gunshot wounds that weren’t considered life-threatening when they arrived at an apartment complex at 3500 Beaver Place, near Nicholasville Road and Man o’ War Boulevard.
The resident, whose name has not been released, said he was shot during a fight after two men entered his apartment and tried to rob him. The resident was armed with a handgun and shot one of the intruders, Lexington police said.
Officer Ann Gutierrez, a Lexington police spokeswoman, said the resident opened the door after the two men knocked. No information was available Thursday morning about whether the resident recognized the intruders.
The alleged intruder and the resident were taken to University of Kentucky Hospital. The alleged intruder later died. The Fayette County coroner has not yet released his name.
No charges have been filed.
On Thursday, Lexington police were still searching for the other alleged intruder who witnesses saw running toward Shillito Park Wednesday night. The man was described as about 6 feet 3 inches tall and wearing a dark gray, hooded jacket.
Lexington police said anyone with information about the incident should call the Personal Crimes Section at (859) 258-3700 or Bluegrass Crime Stoppers at (859) 253-2020.

WEST LIBERTY — Kentucky State Police say a man who escaped from an eastern Kentucky jail last month will face murder charges if he survives a bullet wound.
Police received a call about shots being fired at a residence Monday morning in Morgan County.
Trooper Ralph Lockard says the suspect was gone when they arrived but they learned that the man had taken one of the residents, Melissa Patrick, against her will.
Lockard says the 38-year-old Patrick was fatally shot by Robin Maple, who was also shot. Maple is in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Hospital. Lockard says police have not determined how Maple, who has a child with Patrick, was shot.
Lockard says Maple faces murder, kidnapping and other charges if he survives.
Maple escaped from the Montgomery County Jail in October.

Drivers watched in horror as a man shot himself late Wednesday afternoon on an embankment beside Richmond Road.
The unidentified man was at the University of Kentucky hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. He was later pronounced dead at the University of Kentucky hospital, Lexington Police Lt. Edward Hart said.
A little before 5:30 p.m., as shoppers and commuters crawled by on busy Richmond Road, a man sat on an embankment near the intersection with Mount Tabor Road. He had a gun and had told some customers at the nearby Starbucks he planned on hurting himself, Hart said.
Two people approached the man and tried to talk with him and police were on their way, Hart said, but the man put the handgun in his mouth and shot himself.
A suicide note was found in his pocket, Hart said.
