Bills would toughen penalties for DUI

FRANKFORT — People caught driving drunk just once could be forced to install breath-alcohol monitoring devices in their cars, as Kentucky lawmakers consider toughening the state’s DUI laws.

House lawmakers are considering proposals aimed at increasing the use of ignition locks, which require people to prove they’re not drunk by blowing into a device before starting their vehicles. Another plan would also decrease the current blood-alcohol level that triggers an aggravating factor in DUI sentencing.

“The problem is we’ve got people that are driving 100 times before they even get caught drinking and driving,” said state Rep. Dennis Keene, D-Wilder. “A lot of these people re-offend, and this would curtail them from using their car while they’re out drinking and driving. There’s a tremendous call for this.”

Cross-dresser charged with several driving offenses

A Lexington man stopped for DUI in Franklin County has been indicted for numerous driving offenses including allegedly giving a police officer a female’s driver’s license.

Frank Ellis Jackson III, 28, of Patterson Street in Lexington, was stopped by Franklin County Sheriff’s officers Oct. 11, his indictment said.

Eight is enough

Eugene Martin, 48, of Norwood has been arrested for what Cincinnati police say is his eighth drunken driving charge after he crashed into a stationary work truck at 1:53 a.m. Sunday.

KSP: DUI Driver Hits Gas Line

GRAYSON, Ky. (WSAZ) — State troopers in Kentucky say a man who was driving under the influence is lucky to be alive.

Kentucky State Police say 44-year-old Charles Kouns of Olive Hill was driving north on Damon Branch Road near Grayson when he lost control, entered a creek and hit natural gas line.

Middle school principal charged with DUI

Madison Middle School’s principal faces drunken driving charges.

Bradley Winkler was arrested at 2:10 a.m. Saturday in an area north of Richmond by a Madison County sheriff’s deputy, according to the Madison County Detention Center.

He was released on his own recognizance later that morning, according to the jail.

Madison County public school officials could not be reached for comment.
