Clay Co. minister to serve 194 months

- bestep@herald-leader.com

A Clay County minister convicted of laundering drug money and hiding a federal fugitive has been sentenced to 194 months in prison.

Wayne Reid, 60, was sentenced Thursday in federal court in London by U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves. Reid has been in prison since September.

Reid, a well-known Baptist minister, and his wife, Donna, were convicted of helping hide Larry Golden Jackson Jr., from authorities between the spring of 2002 and September 2005. Jackson, a large-scale marijuana dealer, was wanted during that time.

Prosecutors argued that between 2000 and 2005, the Reids received about $1.5 million in drug money from Jackson and his partner, Eugene “Moose” Stewart and helped launder the money by buying assets such as land, vehicles, heavy equipment and a convenience store.

The conviction contained a forfeiture count allowing the government to seize property from the Reids, including land and three houses. They also were ordered to pay $800,000.

The government took $200,000 in bond money the Reids had posted to partly satisfy the judgment, and won an order to seize several vehicles, farm equipment, tools and even cattle to pay toward the remaining amount.

Covington Diocese responds to lawsuit

The Associated Press

COVINGTON — A northern Kentucky Roman Catholic Church diocese has responded to a civil lawsuit filed on behalf of a second-grade girl alleging sexual assault.

The lawsuit was filed last week and alleges the girl was bullied from January 2008 until she was sexually assaulted in May and that administrators at St. Joseph Elementary School in Crescent Springs failed to protect her from a classmate.

The suit asks for damages of $250,000.

Defendants include the Covington Diocese, the school principal, pastor, a second-grade teacher and several members of the diocese’s administrative staff.

The Kentucky Enquirer reported diocesan spokesman Tom Fitzgerald issued a written statement in which he said the diocese believes the school handled the matter responsibly and sensitively.

Fitzgerald said the diocese remains deeply committed to the safety and well-being of its students.

Defense attorney in fen-phen case ready for February trial

- bortiz@herald-leader.com

After months of pleading with a federal judge to reschedule the trial of two Lexington-area lawyers accused of cheating their clients out of millions of dollars, a defense lawyer now says he will be able to participate in the trial.

O. Hale Almand Jr. filed a notice Thursday that he’s withdrawing his motion to withdraw from the case. Almand said that a case he had in Georgia that was supposed to go to trial this week was dismissed. It was to last three to four weeks.

Another trial, slated to begin March 9 in Mississippi, was rescheduled so it would not conflict with Almand’s defense of William Gallion.

Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr., are scheduled for trial Feb. 17 on wire fraud charges. They’re accused of defrauding 440 clients out of $94 million in a lawsuit settlement with the company that made the diet drug fen-phen.

Almand had been trying to withdraw from the case because he said he did not have enough time to prepare a new defense for Gallion. U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves rejected numerous requests to reschedule the trial so it would not conflict with Almand’s two other cases.
