UK’s Ashton Cobb charged with stalking, absent from game

Herald-Leader staff report

University of Kentucky football player Ashton Cobb was arrested Friday on a warrant after his ex-girlfriend said he sent her several threatening text and voicemail messages, according to court records.

Strong safety Cobb, 21,was not in the stadium for UK’s game against Western Kentucky Saturday evening. UK coach Rich Brooks said that Cobb was suspended from the university; Brooks would not comment further.

He is charged with second-degree stalking, third-degree terroristic threatening, and harassing communications.

Cobb’s ex-girlfriend said he called her about 19 times and sent about 15 text messages on Thursday, court records say. In one voicemail message he used profane language, saying he would kill and rape her.

He then sent a text message that read, “Why so serious?” referencing the Joker from the newest Batman movie, court records say.

Cobb, who posted bond and was released from the Fayette County jail, is scheduled to appear in Fayette District Court Monday for an arraignment.

I had class with this young man. He is no terrorist and may have said these things, but would never follow through on such threats.

It doesn’t matter if he would follow through on the threats or not, people are unpredictable. The fact that he said those things at all shows something about his character, and he scared a young woman.

I agree, Ashton has always been a very nice guy to be around and I could never see him act in a violent manner. I wish him the best and hope all of this is cleared up soon.DogLady

it doesnt matter if you grew up with him, people change. What do you think the people at Virginia Tech would say to this? Take everything seriously especially if you do not know the whole situation. For those of you who think you know Ashton did u not hear what he said. Thats not “high school” drama jlask, thats a serious threat. You think its a women’s fault for threats like this? thats a joke…even bigger than peewees playhouse…way to make light of a situation that could have lost someone their life!

Guys, and boys.. please.. lets grow up a bit.. It is a seriouse matter and i think Joe you do have a point, but guys we need to not kick or punish a young man from getting an eduction, or give up on ASHTON for what he has done. I think there should be actions for what he did, but I think he should go to council once or twice a week and be suspended from the football team for a few games, but I do agree some only some with Jlask that this is all high school crap, but in this day and age everything you do and say does have serious problems with it. And that is why the school is not taking this light. I just hope he is the nice young man you say and will turn this into a positive and get his crap together and focus on school and Football.

    Mr. jlask,

Why do you think the stalking law was conceived? Do you think that KY lawmakers spent the time to craft the law and passed it to amuse themselves?

“The stalking law prohibits making real or implied threats against another to make them fear illegal sexual contact or threat of injury.”- Lexington Herald, 1997

The key words here are “implied” and “threat.” Do not threaten. If you threaten to take someone’s life, you can be hospitalized under petition. You may not have meant it, but you threatened.

Ashton may be a good young man who has made a costly mistake. But he is in college, he is an adult. He made a choice to do this. If his girlfriend did “egg it on,” (your words), Ashton made the choice to react as he did. No one forced him to text and leave voice mail messages saying he would kill and rape her. DUH, buddy!

This guy never takes responsibility for stuff he does. He has a huge ego, cheated on his ex-girlfriend and then acts as if it is her fault for making him mad. She is such a cool girl.

He is responsible for threatening her, she is not. He is responsible for his actions, she is not. So, please stop blaming her for his crime. I hope he moves away from her, and starts over elsewhere.

i think the university overreacted by suspending him. what happened to innocent until proven guilty? honestly this is being blown out of proportion. i know several females who have done something like this for revenge. and who is going to question the word of the “scared lil female” who is accusing her big black football player ex of all this? no one because it would send the wrong message to the public.

and obviously there are tons of factors that won’t be released like if she actually has the texts or voicemail files or if they are simply taking her word for it and if they were even actually sent by him.

i say we quit judging and leave it to the people involved. since when has any other stalking case gotten this much media attention? people are just morbid. until then, Ashton deserves to still be in school and on the field.

  13. 13 Joe

jlask: the only thing i’m going to say to you is that if you want someone to take you seriously on things like this learn to spell, use the spacebar, and dont talk in “text” language.
hey hey: the university obviously had some overwhelming evidence and were not just going on her words to re-act the way they did. I agree with you that this has become way to public. I think the truth needs to be told and with it being so public the truth gets twisted out of control.
It is true that he is innocent until proven guilty but it seems like everyone is just thinking of him. Does anyone wonder that she might have been in legit danger and extremely scared for her life? does anybody care that she might never be able to walk on campus without being scared? NO ONE DESERVES things like this. There is no such thing as “egging” on threats like this! Just try looking at it from both sides and then see what you can come up with.

  14. 14 hey hey

Joe, I have looked at this from both sides. And I\’m a female so I\’ve even looked at it from that point of view as well. But if you look at some other forums and stuff, it\’s getting out of hand with what people are saying. So I\’m just playing devil\’s advocate here. Also, there is TONS of hearsay flying around BUT I have mutual friends with them and I have heard nothing spectacular about the ex-girlfriend. This wouldn\’t be the first time she\’s tried to get at him.

And as far as the university suspending him, I honestly don\’t think they were going off evidence. If she had enough evidence in the first place, would he have entered a non-guilty plea? I think the university is scared that if they didn\’t do it, it would send the wrong message out to the public, especially since UK is HUGE on the women\’s protection center and everything. It\’s all about perception.

I just think to take away his education as well as football is ridiculous. These charges get brought up in court all the time and no one is suspended from their jobs during it. His pretrial isn\’t until the 24th, so he\’s pretty much screwed out of this semester. fair? no way.

  15. 15 meg

scared of Ashton? no way. the kid has SEVEN sisters. i’m sure he wouldn’t want someone threatening any of his sisters like that. he’s a good guy and some girl is just mad because he’s moved on.

  16. 16 Trent

    You’re all ridiculous.

  17. 17 IKNOWHIM!

I KNOW HIM. HE WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS. THERE IS A SIDE THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT HIM. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE KNOWN HIM IN THE PAST AND THINK HE WOULD NOT DO THIS, YOU DON’T KNOW THE REAL ASHTON COBB. DO NOT FEEL BAD FOR HIM.

  18. 18 kevin myers

Ashton has always been a real down to earth dude he is the hardest worker i have ever seen i cant imagine him doing something like that but i can imagine a jealous girl who wants attention and doesnt care if she ruins someones reputation

  19. 19 Nah Nah Nah

Dear People, This is football… we expect people that play football to be aggressive. Maybe this girl isn’t so innocent? Hmmmmm maybe? Maybe she’s some dumb whore who pushed him too far. Let’s take his side because he plays for UK and I like the wildcats. LOL I hate girls… they’re all stupid.

  20. 20 someone

it sickens me that everyone is assuming cobb’s ex-girlfriend is automatically a “whore” because she took his threats to the authorities. his ex-girlfriend is a girl i’ve known half my life and she is anything but a whore. saying she just wants attention is not true either. she wanted her name out of the limelight, she just wanted cobb to leave her alone. the text messages and emails are real and were submitted to the police as well as the judge. just because those texts and emails weren’t broadcasted on the news or internet for everyone to see doesn’t mean they don’t exist. whether he meant what he said, he shouldn’t of said it. there was a legit reason as to why she was scared.
