FRANKFORT — Kentucky State Police officials say they’re saving on gas with fewer rolling patrols and more checkpoints.

Commissioner Rodney Brewer has been urging troopers to drive around on patrol less because of increasing gasoline prices. Instead, troopers have been conducting more checkpoint patrols.
Between July 1 and September 1, state police have conducted 1,103 safety road checks across the state. They resulted in 342 DUI arrests, 405 seat belt violations and 129 drug arrests. There were also 4 stolen vehicles recovered, 120 child restraint violations and 254 suspended license violations.
Police said Tuesday they’ve saved 3,770 gallons of gas and about $14,000.
I THINK CHECKPOINTS ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL. WE ARE BECOMING A SOCIALIST COUNTRY.

I think this is a very applaudable effort. I am glad to see that someone is concerned with saving our state money. This is a effort that I would like to see displayed in other areas of our state government.
I think criminals know this,& crime will rise. I know on my street,people run stop signs, speed.Police use to patrol every 2-3 hours.

Law enforecement’s goal is to protect the general public from citezens that break laws. There is a reason laws exist and the aforementioned report justifies the need for law enforcement presence on Kentucky highways. It IS against the law to steal vehicles, not properly restrain children, posess controlled substances, and drive under the influence. When you personally KNOW someone killed (specifically a 12 year little girl), you might fully comprehend why we have an organized system of multi-level law enforcement agencies; including but not limited to the KSP.
So without sarcasm, thanks a BUNCH!
It never fails that when a news media reports ANY enforcement action by a police agency, the whiners come out of the woodwork to complain about the police. I realize that some individuals have had negative experiences (in their eyes) with police and they will always be there to complain. It’s a sign of the times that law enforcement cannot do their jobs without being criticized at every turn and the “good citizens” keep quiet until the police are needed.
Congratulations for the State Police for the outstanding work they are performing in the State of Ky. I think the checkpoints are a good thing. From the numbers listed for citations I think they are proving their point that not only saving gas is essential and a success but,also,people are not getting by with breaking the law. Those numbers of drunk drivers were stopped before a posible fatility could have taken place. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB!!!!! It is true the officers cannot be everywhere at the same time but if they are at one place just one time and catch the ones that are breaking the law by drunk driving– children in car seats not properly.
